How to Handle Bee Swarms [1]

During the spring bees will swarm as an important part of their reproductive cycle. When the swarm’s population is healthy and strong, it will produce a new queen. The original queen will then leave, taking half of the swarm’s population with her.

If you see a bee swarm in your backyard or on your daily walk, don’t panic. With no hives, eggs, or colony to protect swarmed bees are generally docile. Do not attempt to spray the swarm with water or pesticides or chase them away. Instead, contact one of Alberta’s apiculturists (bee keepers) who will ensure the bees are safely relocated and helped to establish a new colony. If we all work together responsibly, we can save the bees and save our environment.
