Pet Sitter Communication [1]

Leaving your pet in the care of someone else isn’t as simple as you might think. You have to ensure your pet will have sufficient food, water, their favourite toys, a leash (for dogs), and instructions on their bathroom habits. As a pet owner, you know that your pet has a mind of its own, and sometimes that can lead to a negative experience, especially for someone who doesn’t know your pet as well as you do.

If you are planning to leave your pet in someone else’s care, here are a number of important details that you should consider and communicate to the individual you are leaving your pet with.

  • Your pet’s normal behaviour, and what could be considered ‘abnormal’

  • Favorite toys / activities

  • What is, and isn’t allowed (ex. is the dog allowed on the couch? In the bedroom?)

  • Your pet’s routines, including exercise and feeding

  • Medications and regimens (if applicable)

  • What to, and what not to, feed your pet

  • Household risks to pet health and their locations - this can include:

    • Chocolate

    • Alcohol

    • Cannabis

    • Xylitol

An emergency preparedness kit is also very important, and will help you care for your pet in the event of an emergency, and can be given to a person who may be caring for your pet.

  • Emergency preparedness kit - should include:

    • 30-day supply of medications (if required)

    • two-week supply of food and fresh water

    • First aid kit

    • Leash or carrier for sudden and secure travel

    • Kitty litter (if applicable)

    • Your emergency contact number

    • Contact details for your veterinarian (including vaccination records and insurance details)

    • A travel container (to allow quick and easy transport of essential supplies and smaller items if necessary)
