Biosecurity in Practice - Dairy Protocols [1]

The dairy industry in Canada realizes the importance of biosecurity in reducing disease risk, and thereby its positive impact on animal health and welfare in improving farm productivity, in reducing zoonotic disease risk, and in maintaining and growing markets for its products, both domestically and internationally. A national standard has been established in the Biosecurity for Canadian Dairy Farms: National Standard [2] that sets the foundation for achieving consistent industry-wide biosecurity by dairy producers across the country.

The proAction Initiative [3] by Dairy Farmers of Canada offers evidence to the public that dairy producers are responsible for their animals in food production. The program evaluates farms in six areas: milk quality, food safety, animal care, traceability, biosecurity, and environment.

Veterinarians work closely with dairy farmers to optimize animal health and welfare.
