Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in Alberta
One cow in Alberta has tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The positive test was confirmed on February 11, 2015. This is the first confirmed BSE case in Alberta since 2011. The cow was identified through the Canada-Alberta BSE surveillance program, and no part of the cow entered the food system. There are no implications for human health. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is leading the investigation, and Alberta Agriculture is providing support and working with industry partners to keep them informed. BSE is a federally reportable disease.
